Who would’ve thought that sharing a growth moment from childhood would lead to client leads?
It happens so unexpectedly that it creeps up on me and I usually feel like
“geeze I did it again.”
So working in coffee shops most of the time I come in contact with marketing directors, company owners or entrepreneurs and unknowingly while we’re standing in line waiting to order these small talk moments turn into “trauma bonding buddy moments”.
Seeing it go from “so what are you working on” to “how did you get into marketing” to “wow, I have a similar childhood experience that I’m processing too” is kinda wild. I mean I don’t intentionally step out and say to the universe,
“Universe, we’re going to talk about trauma today!”
But it happens and usually in under 5 minutes. Lol
My guess is that the vulnerability of opening up leads people into sharing their perspective as well as a story or two. Which leads to us talking about the power of story and when shared properly it can be powerful in ways that connect a community with a brand or person.
With this happening multiple times with clients that I’ve picked up over the last year, I wanted to share my thoughts on it. I never went into it thinking “hmm this could be a way to gain clients”, I feel as though it has to be organic or there is no initial trust that leads to “I can see this working out” mindset of me assisting with their marketing needs.
The ability to share with people I’m learning is not always so available for everyone, so I now make sure not to spam people with my “origin” story and how I started. I guess you can say that I allow the universal vibes to dictate these moments.
It is always nice pick me up though I must say when I’m in need of a coffee and when a conversation does the work I feel even more energized to get after it.
When doors open off the strength of my growth from childhood I can’t help but be at a loss for words when it happens. I sit back like “Wow, God/universe you wild for that”. But it makes things even better when I develop friendships out of those moments.
So thank you to the people out there who are processing their childhood and breaking generational curses while handling business at work. I salute you all!
I’d like to hear from you all as well, have you ever encountered a moment like this? Share in the comments please.
Thank you for reading.
